You know that antioxidants are good for you. You know that there is a lot of it in all kinds of great fresh produce. What would you choose to concentrate on if you wanted the most antioxidants in your diet? Would you choose apples? How about artichokes or blueberries? Red beans, surprisingly, are the richest source of antioxidants for your money. You could do a lot worse than going with red beans, nutrition-wise.
For some reason, those small red beans have such a super-concentrated store of antioxidants than even other antioxidant powerhouses like blueberries – the traditional champ in this area. That’s what the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has to say about it all. There are other kinds of beans that really vie for the top spot in beans nutrition too – it’s the red kidney bean. The have twice as much antioxidant goodness as blueberries do. And beans are so cheap, they are practically free – unlike fruits.
The winner in the antioxidants race of course is the small red bean or the Mexican bean. These look quite similar to red kidney beans except for how small they are. They are wonderful in all kinds of recipes. But the other two kinds – the red kidney bean and the adzuki bean are no slouches in beans nutrition either. Everyone is quite familiar with the red kidney bean. These mean a lot of protein, and iron; in addition to all their antioxidants. They are great in salads and chili dishes. The adzuki bean is quite popular in the Far East for how sweet it is. They use them in desserts over in Japan. These make for a wonderful source of zinc, potassium and magnesium. If you can’t find adzuki beans at your local supermarket, you should probably try the Chinatown in your city or an Oriental grocery store.
Of course, all red beans are wonderful sources of antioxidants. But they come as a whole package. They have so much soluble fiber that they are about the best cholesterol-lowering food you can think of. Not to mention, these beans are low-calorie foods, and they fill you up really quickly. If you are trying to lose weight, beans nutrition is where you should probably get a lot of your daily needs.
